SKYFALL location filming: "M"'s residence John Barry's London home?
Added February 21, 2012 Still photos of Dame Judi Dench as "M" filming Skyfall in London, appear to show her leaving John Barry's former apartment in Cadogan Square, which we assume now belongs to his wife.
The apartment is empty and available for rental so it's perfectly feasible that Laurie could have allowed filming there for a few days, especially given her long-standing friendship with Barbara Broccoli.
Was this merely used as somewhere for Dame Judi to rest between takes in Cadogan Square, or is it going to double as M's or even James Bond's private London residence?
Certainly the interior is rather grand and admirably suited to a person of their standing, though one imagines scenes of this kind would normally be shot in the studio,
We await any further news of this with great interest.

"Give Me a Smile" was first given to Corina to perform at the 2001
Royal Albert Hall John Barry concert than never happened. So far only
her rehearsal tape survives. But now that's going to change.
We understand that lyricist Don
Black has given his blessing.
Corina is working in the studio

Don Black's radio tribute to John Barry airs Added December 9, 2011
Don Black's long-awaited radio tribute to John Barry is scheduled for
Monday 2nd January between 7 and 9 p.m. on BBC Radio 2.
Don remembers his first sighting of "a classy, elegant chap" on Tin Pan Alley, who ate "like a ballerina" and would despatch indebted film producers with his characteristic "Yorkshire bluntness".
On their music collaborations, he remembers Sir Tom Jones fainting after the sustained end note of Thunderball, and a producer's dismissal of the "lousy tune" and "filthy lyrics" of Diamonds Are Forever.
Don tells of artistic differences during rehearsals for Billy Liar, and the complete failure of another musical, The Little Prince And The Aviator, which closed during preview.
He recalls a memorable night at the home of Leslie Bricusse when he, Quincy Jones, Henry Mancini and Burt Bacharach had to break up a fight between Barry and John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas after the composer challenged Phillips to hum something by Mahler!
This tribute is sound-tracked by some of Barry's best loved compositions, including Born Free, Out Of Africa, The Ipcress File, Midnight Cowboy, Dances With Wolves and several of those classic Bond themes.
Bryan Forbes to be honoured by the British Film Institute Added December 8, 2011
Director, writer and producer Bryan Forbes, who collaborated with John Barry on six films, is to be honoured by the British Film Institute.
On 24th January at the NFT, South Bank, London, Bryan will be interviewed about his career after a screening of "Whistle Down The Wind". He will then be presented with a Fellowship, the BFI's highest honour, in recognition of his lengthy and successful career in the business.

In line with its 50th anniversary, Hallmark are releasing a CD of "Stringbeat" on the 1st January 2012. Due to an extension of copyright in sound recordings from 50 to 70 years voted in by the European Parliament, which is likely to become law in the UK next year or the year after, the days of new public domain re-issues are numbered. However, this won't prevent future PD releases of music which is *already* out of copyright by the time the law is in force.
The copyright situation is succinctly summed up by David Ades of The Robert Farnon Society in this article.

Silva Screen sub-licenses Ipcress File

Silva Screen have sub-licensed a number of their CD releases to Dutch-based company Music on Vinyl (see news item below), including The Ipcress File.
This special 180 grams audiophile vinyl release comes in a Gatefold sleeve, and at the suggestion of Silva's commercial director, David Stoner, MOV opted to restore the running order that was on the original LP and to have all the dialogue clips as a bonus 7" which comes with the LP.
All the CD booklet notes from Silva's CD have been retained in the gatefold sleeve.
It *should* be possible to order this via your local record shop (if you still have one) or via the usual on-line shops such as Amazon. However, be prepared for an expensive purchase - amazon.co.uk currently offers it for an eye-watering £27.55 - but it should be worth waiting for Silva to stock it themselves.

Regretfully we only found out today about John Barry's Golden Touch, part of Behind the Screen with BAFTA / Film4 Summer Screen, which takes place at Somerset House, London, on 28th July:
"The late John Barry is undoubtedly one of cinema’s greatest composers. Well known for his outstanding, brand-defining scores for the Bond series from Dr. No through The Living Daylights, he also wrote the music for countless other major features: Petulia, The Lion in Winter, Walkabout, Midnight Cowboy, Out of Africa, Body Heat, among them. Over the years, he received 5 Oscars, a BAFTA and 4 Grammys awards, an amazing record which also reflects the high regard in which he was held by the industry. In this event, Composer Miguel Mera will lead several of Barry’s musical sons and daughters through a rich array of his spectacular scores to celebrate his particularly golden touch."
Unfortunately the event is already sold out, as is the film it accompanies later that evening, The Spy Who Loved Me.
It's a pity BAFTA didn't tells us about the event earlier since we could have ensured the real John Barry fans got the opportunity to attend the talk. We could also have pointed out that the film they've chosen has no music by John Barry!

Friday 1st July at 20:00 BST: Friday Night is Music Night. " Sir Michael Parkinson introduces a memorial concert to celebrate the life of composer John Barry, which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in June."
"... as well as tributes from Don Black, Sir Michael Caine, Timothy Dalton, Sir George Martin, and Sir Tim Rice." No, Sir Tim did not do a tribute.
Or listen (again for a whole week) online.
By the way the TV cameras in the hall were there only for the internal TV circuit shown on the large screen - or so said the main cameraman.

A film music concert in Vienna will take place in the Musikvereinssaal (the auditorium of the New Year's concerts) on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 8pm: Best of Hollywood II.
The organisers will try to add a respectable quantum of John Barry's music to the programme. Music and songs still to be selected; performed by Maya Hakvoort.
THE PRE-CONCERT FAN MEET On June 20, 2011

Current thinking seems to indicate the BFI area on the South Bank in the
afternoon, or late afternoon.
The restaurant is literally on the bank of the South Bank, almost
underneath Waterloo Bridge.
You walk across the footbridge from Embankment tube to the South Bank,
turn left down the steps and walk along the bank, past the Royal
Festival Hall, until you almost get to the National. You cannot miss it.
The BFI is outdoors and in. Weather forecast at the time of writing is
not good:
The Riverfront, the BFI restaurant on the South Bank is a good place for
eating in the afternoon. It has both indoor and outdoor facilities and
it's not too far away from South Kensington tube station...
... which itself is 15 minutes walk from the RAH or...
... The Gore Hotel, which could equally be the final pre-concert drinks
meeting venue!
So: 1pm-4.30pm (approx) at the BFI and 5pm onwards at the Gore Hotel, next to the RAH, by the way.
We do not know if we all fit in anywhere, so don't pin us down on anything. But these are two places we know about where fans try to meet. And many have never met before. Proprietors won't know what's going to hit them!

There will be 2 showings of "Across The Sea Of Time", Saturday, March 19, 2011, Fort Wadsworth Visitor's Center of Gateway National Park, 120 New York Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10305. The visitor's center located under the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Bridge. Showtimes at daytime 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM Eastern Time.
Also on the bill 1967 documentary "Island Called Ellis" at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.
Screenings won't be IMAX 3D, will be Dolby Stereo to fully experience John Barry's glorious music.

Hats off to Pete Walker who has just discovered a hitherto unknown John Barry composition. "Pray to The Lord" was written for an album of Organ music in honour of Dr. Francis Jackson's 90th birthday, in 2007.
The CD (and accompanying organ sheet music in book format) containing a recording by John Scott Whiteley can normally be ordered from Banks Music Publications in York, but apparently they are fresh out of them. Not much of a cheese shop really, is it?
However, they say it is being reprinted/pressed and further copies will be available in a few weeks.

EMI announces a John Barry box-set - exact reissue of the three volumes of "The EMI Years"

Following hard on the heels of the Adam Faith box-set news, EMI has announced a John Barry box-set. That's the good news. The not so good news is that this appears to be an exact reissue of the three volumes of "The EMI Years" from the early 90s. So no additional tracks and no new remastering. It does look to be cheap, though!

There will be a two-hour John Barry tribute on Classic FM, UK, Sunday night at 8pm on the David Mellor's show. N.B.! Slightly (slightly?) disappointing to us hardcore fans, he plays just six themes (covers too and not the best) and the rest all covers of famous film themes. "Dancing With Wolves"? Opps.

This weekend Fali R. Singara will be doing a 2 hour special show live of John Barry's best themes and his legacy to Bond on All India Radio.
It's on 107.1 FM in Mumbai and from 10-12 in the evening.
Unfortunately All India Radio can't stream the show live outside of India on the web.

The Music Week web site says "Plans for John Barry London tribute". It has an interview with Don Black who says that he believes that Laurie Barry is possibly going to have the tribute at the Royal Albert Hall either June or July.

What a Whopper on DVD The Adam Faith film, What a Whopper, is being released by Renown Pictures on 31st January 2011.
John Barry's connection to this film is that he arranged Faith's songs, What a Whopper & The Time Has Come.

The Whisperers with Richard Rodney Bennett's Equus on new CD
Bruce Kimmel's Kritzerland label has announced that a future CD release will couple John Barry's The Whisperers with Richard Rodney Bennett's Equus.
Unlike the previous Ryko release, The Whisperers will not include any dialogue from the film.
Producer Bruce Kimmel has said that although shipping date is towards the end of November, those ordering direct from him usually receive copies well in advance of that.
He's also said this is limited to 1000 copies.
The price is $19.98 plus shipping.
Bruce @ Kritzerland has also confirmed that a CD re-issue of THE KNACK is also in the works, but by another label, not Kritzerland. 18 October, 2010

Gent confirms John Barry's absence. Arnold to accept award instead
The organisation of the
Ghent Film Festival has confirmed in an email to us that John Barry will not be present at the festival concert celebrating his music to accept the lifetime achievement award in person, due to health reasons. David Arnold will now accept the award in his name. 11 October, 2010
Update: Peter Greenhill had a quick word with David Arnold, after the charity showing of 'Psycho' at the Empire, Leicester Sq, London, when he did a signing with Christopher Gunning and Anne Dudley. Pete mentioned the Ghent award he was picking up for Barry this week and asked how Barry was. Arnold said that he'd spoken to Barry on the phone on Saturday night and he was 'OK' but not well enough to travel. He also said that there is an issue with John being surrounded by people wanting to chat and get autographs when he attends these events and implied that he finds this a little stressful. David said it's a great programme on Thursday and said that he's looking forward to hearing this music played live by a great orchestra. 18 October, 2010

Miss Shirley Bassey Written by author John Williams, this is an unauthorised biography of the singer, just been published in the UK.
A cursory glance through the book reveals details of an affair with John Barry during the '63/4 concert tour.
It also includes an unsuccessful legal attempt to force the Bond producers to include "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in the film Thunderball, after Barry had allegedly not liked her version and re-recorded it with Dionne Warwick.
